Mike Andrew attended the June15, 2016  Retirees Advisory Committee in Albany. This was a face to face meeting that addressed many of our concerns regarding Pensions, voting and the constitutional convention.


Concerns covered addressed the illegal use of NYSUT list serves to contact retirees for selling products, the new veterans pension credit does not cover current retirees, IRS scams aimed at seniors and the use of retirees to provide historical perspective to active local associations.

1. Starting July 1, a new state law requires all permanently or professionally certified teachers and Level III teaching assistants working in public schools or BOCES to register online with the State Education Department. Re-registration will be required every five years.

2. According to SED, once the system is up and running, you can register early. However, SED is encouraging people to wait until their birth month so that the TEACH system is not overwhelmed. Registration must be completed by the end of your birth month. There is no charge to register.

All over the East Coast union Locals, labor councils, and Area Labor Federations are “adopting” Verizon Wireless stores in solidarity and support for striking Verizon workers.   CNY ALF is adopting the Vestal Verizon Wireless store from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Wednesdays, starting the 11th.

Invitation From Greater Binghamton Labor~Religion Coalition

At the RC-11 Lunch Bunch Meeting on Monday, May 2nd Ben Frisbie invited those present and any members of RC-11 to participate in the activities of the Greater Binghamton Labor~Religion Coalition.  It is a local all volunteer group that works to educate, organize and mobilize the religious and labor communities to give workers voice for the common good.  The Coalition engages in campaigns that help prevent wage theft, worker abuse, and improve conditions for workers not represented by unions.  Rev.      On 1/27/16 Mike Andrew took part in the Retirees Advisory Council conference call. This meeting was one of four RAC meetings held during the year, with each of the State's retiree council's represented. 
     Among the subjects discussed were a number of Medicare reimbursement issues that have come up since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. 
     There was continued concern expressed as to the dangers of a constitutional convention. The dominant theme of these conversations was a feeling that nothing good can come from opening up the New York State Constitution. Our pensions

 The Dec 16, 2015, end of year budget deal between congressional leaders and the White House did not repeal the "Cadillac tax" but delayed it for two years raising doubt about whether it will ever take effect, especially now that every major presidential candidate opposes it.

The Budget deal defers this tax on expensive employer health plans. The new tax has been dubbed the Cadillac tax because it applies to high-priced health-insurance plans, only.

If this tax is not changed or repealed, many NYSUT members would be negatively impacted by a dramatic increase in taxes on their health-insurance
